ChatGPT is the OpenAI tool that can write poetry, prose and even code software like a human.
Most of the chatter revolves around amazement, fear and warning. There is a lot of talk about fear and cheating, warnings about the dangers to humanity, and concerns about outsourcing creativity to machines.
All the chatter is missing the moment. ChatGPT, which stands for Geneerative Pretrained Transformer, is actually less remarkable and less frightening than most media coverage. It also requires fewer warnings. ChatGPT is an AI language modeling from San Francisco-based OpenAI. It can communicate with people via text and generate many content on request.
The most significant trend in technology this decade is generative AI. Let’s get to know it better. Here are six ChatGPT facts that you may not have heard.
1. ChatGPT doesn’t have a unique capability. ChatGPT’s specialness is only due to its public nature. You’re not the only one who is capable of AI projects.
Google, Meta and other major tech companies have created generative AI tools that are at least as powerful as ChatGPT. Some competitors released limited versions, while others didn’t make it available for public use.
Before ChatGPT, Meta released a chatbot named Blenderbot. However, the bot was so conservative in its moderation that it became boring to use.
Real-world misadventures are the source of all that caution. Microsoft created a chatbot named “Tay” many years ago. It was trained from social media posts. The AI gleefully retrieved content from online haters and trolls, and then spewed racism to Microsoft’s dismay.
Google fired an engineer for falsely claiming that Google’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), was sentient.
ChatGPT is tech’s current favorite flavor of the month due to OpenAI’s boldness and willingness to release the tool to the public. The bot can also address controversial topics. Others are more cautious. ChatGPT has attracted so much attention that they are scrambling to make their products available to everyone.
Google issued an internal code red to speed up its AI offerings’ public availability. Google plans to release 20 new AI tools in the coming year. China’s Baidu will release a ChatGPT competitor on March.
Futurepedia, which lists hundreds of AI tools, has a list that you can use. Many are based on ChatGPT but some are stronger competitors.
ChatGPT isn’t the only AI system that’s powerful. ChatGPT is just one of the most powerful AI systems because it’s bold and available.
2. Microsoft controls OpenAI. The for-profit OpenAI LP that makes ChatGPT, is a subsidiary company of OpenAI Incorporated. OpenAI Incorporated doesn’t “own” OpenAI LP.
Microsoft is the largest investor. The company plans to throw another $10 billion at OpenAI LP. This will give Microsoft a 49% share. The nonprofit parent company of the company will own only 2%; the rest will be held by all investors.
Microsoft is also working to build ChatGPT capability for Bing, Azure PowerPoint, Outlook and other products.
Microsoft is the sole owner of OpenAI.
3. ChatGPT is not the most common criticism. The three main concerns with ChatGPT are 1) that students can cheat; 2) that it will be used for unethical reasons, such as plagiarism or social engineering; and (3) that it sometimes gives false information.
The first two can be ignored. Tools that detect AI-generated content will be available for every new generation of generative AI like ChatGPT. ChatGPT and AI chatbots are a natural progression. Their unethical usage was always going to be a problem.
AI tools are not responsible for the moral failings that humans make.
This third criticism is incorrect. ChatGPT and other chatbots may say false things because their training datasets containing the false information have not been vetted thoroughly. It’s like criticizing movies for being bad. It misses the point.
Companies will be able to use generative AI with their own data or with carefully vetted data in the future. The technology is just one piece, but the data is the other.
Imagine a CIA-like organization putting all of its intelligence reports, political analysis, and transcripts of millions of phone calls into ChatGPT. It will be impossible to gain insight quickly. This technology holds incredible potential. ChatGPT training data today is outdated.
4. ChatGPT is made up of people. It’s tempting to think that text-based AI can be used to interact with thoughts of computers rather than humans’. ChatGPT uses human programming to extract human-made content. This content is then vetted, prioritized, and ranked by humans. It contains human errors, biases, and human conclusions.
5. ChatGPT requires user skill to reach its full potential. All text-input generative AI tool require skilled inputs in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. “Prompt engineering”, the new skill that allows you to communicate with each AI tool using text inputs, is similar to SEO. There will be an industry of consultants and tools to help you develop and use knowledge about what words produce which result.
“Prompt engineering” has become a speciality. It’s something that most people will be able to do. This “cheat sheet” will help you get started.
6. ChatGPT is used by some industries. Some types of professional writing are “robotic,” automated, and formulaic. It doesn’t matter if AI does it. This dull task can be done faster and cheaper by AI, according to some professionals.
ChatGPT has already been adopted by the real estate industry. There are only so many things you can do to describe a property for sale when listing it. The basics include the following: square footage, total area, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, price, etc. Moreover, descriptive and factual terms such as “renovated,” open concept,” formal dining room, etc.
ChatGPT allows real estate agents to simply enter all the data and the AI will create the listing website overview.
They aren’t the only ones who are ahead of the curve in real estate. AI tools will be used by many professionals.
ChatGPT is grabbing everyone’s attention. The reality is that we are in the very early stages of generative AI. Understanding the reality of this technology’s progress is everyone’s responsibility.
