(TNS — Kaden Hyatt, 17, sent an email mass to College Preparatory, his Oakland high school, a few weeks before winter break. ChatGPT, a new platform for artificial intelligence, was his discovery. It is an AI-laced search engine that can produce original essays, solve math problems, and even write short fiction on almost any topic.
Write a 1,000 word paper about the rise and fall Genghis Khan. This task was completed in 45 seconds and took one minute. How do you find the quadratic polynomial’s derivative? It takes less than 30 seconds with step-by–step instructions marking the steps.
Students are raving about the platform, while teachers (at least those who heard of it) are scrambling to find answers. Many people debate whether ChatGPT can revolutionize education.
It is one of the most powerful tools available in recent years, and it is totally free! Hyatt, who has been intrigued by new technologies for a long time, wrote:
Hyatt’s email reached dozens of students and teachers, but not everyone shared his enthusiasm. Experts believe ChatGPT, the most human-like form of free artificial Intelligence, is the best, and has the potential to disrupt many industries. It can also rock the classroom.
Victor Lee, the Data Interactions & STEM Teaching and Learning Lab leader at Stanford University, said, “We’re looking to a shock for the education system technologically.” “In the same way that Google outperformed search engines or Netflix changed our expectations about streaming content, so ChatGPT will be the model we continue to use.” We are in a new era.
GPT is for generative pretrained transformer. This type of artificial intelligence can write like a person after crawling through and synthesizing large amounts of text. OpenAI, a San Francisco-based research firm, launched ChatGPT two months ago. Since then, students and scholars alike have been abuzz about ChatGPT, which produces cover letters, poems and even scientific studies at the touch of a button. Anyone can create an account on the Internet and get started using the tool in seconds. However, access to the tool has been restricted due to high traffic.
ChatGPT was blocked by school districts in New York City, Seattle, and Seattle just a month after it was released. It appears that no Bay Area school district has done so. However, there are many others following the chatbot’s lead across the region.
Hyatt included YouTube videos he had made to help teachers better understand ChatGPT in his email to the school. He explained how ChatGPT works and its limitations in the first episode. In the second, he demonstrated how ChatGPT can be used to help students solve math problems.
Hyatt said in one video, “It’s quite amazing that this tool now is available to everyone.”
College Prep, an exclusive school that charges $50,000 per year, invited Hyatt in December to talk with its curriculum committee. Teachers, students, and administrators explored what education means in a world where such an intelligent tool is available.
Hyatt stated that there was a variety of reactions. Hyatt said that there were many reactions, including wonder and amazement as well as fear and existential dread.
Hyatt explained that one of his friends sent two essays to College Prep in an experiment to see if ChatGPT could do it. ChatGPT wrote one essay, and the student wrote the other. Assuming it would be an easy choice, the teacher tried to determine which piece belonged.
Hyatt says that the teacher made a mistake.
ChatGPT can do a literary analysis on Beloved, House on Mango Street or the Great Gatsby if you ask it,” Sarah Levine, an assistant professor of Education at Stanford University, said. It will give you a B+ essay that teachers would love to see their students write.
Teachers across the country shared the same fear at the College Prep meeting. “With Open AI and #chatGPT, I would be surprised if half as many schools used essays in 2 years. Rick Clark, Georgia Tech’s director of admissions, tweeted that the time is now. Another user said that he witnessed the death of college essays in realtime while using the chatbot.
Teachers are beginning to see the benefits of AI-infused education as they experiment with the tool. ChatGPT is being considered by Kim Lepre, an English teacher at Chula Vista Middle School. She believes it could help students learn in innovative and new ways.
Lepre said, “It’s almost like when people switched from the abacus into the calculator. They thought it would make people less good at math.” They realized that the calculator was a wonderful tool. ChatGPT is a great tool, but you have to see it differently.
According to an EdWeek Research Center survey, ChatGPT has been used by some teachers to cut down on their workloads. ChatGPT allows teachers to send emails and write lesson plans, while also reducing the amount of work that takes up half of their time.
Chico English teacher Jake Carr has been using ChatGPT daily since December to create flawed paragraphs for his students and to instruct the chatbot to generate examples to be used in class.
Carr stated, “I have come to see ChatGPT and other machines learning as the intern that I’ve always desired.” “I shift the heavy lifting and fine-tune what it produces afterwards.”
Teachers aren’t worried that the bot could lead to an explosion of cheating. Lepre stated that some children have attempted to evade the rules since the beginning of school. It’s unlikely that cheaters will start to cheat just because they have a chatbot.
Cheating, even with artificial intelligence, is not new to Danielle Alm who teaches high-school algebra and precalculus at Danville High School. She’s been able to recognize the signs since the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, AI-produced math homework often contains zeros that a human student would not.
Alm stated that “there’s nothing out there” that can replicate the human brain. “You have to still take your tests infront of me, and it won’t help you then.”
ChatGPT is also far from perfect. OpenAI spokesperson says that ChatGPT’s knowledge of 2021 will be limited due to the way it was built. It can admit to its mistakes, and create what it doesn’t know, in a manner that is eerily human.
ChatGPT is still a popular choice for education experts. The tool is currently free but it remains to see if it will remain that way. OpenAI will release ChatGPT-4, the latest version of the tool later this year. Some experts claim it will be 500 times faster than the predecessor.
Levine stated that even though the current model is not ideal, the tool will force teachers into rethinking what and why they teach. He also said that the tool will make it clear to them whether essay writing is the best way for students to learn. Experts say that the take-home essay is likely to be gone soon. However, that doesn’t mean all of the classroom is dead.
Ask the culprit.
ChatGPT said that Chat GPT and other language models can be an effective tool for education. However, it is important to use this technology with care and make sure that student learning is supported.
