Apple's new MacBook Pro has received rave reviews. The new MacBook Pros are smashing benchmarks, as expected, compared to their M1 predecessors. Even more remarkable is the fact that Apple appears to have made significant improvements in efficiency. PCMag's colleagues took the 16-inch Pro with M1 Max SoC to the test bench and found it had an amazing battery life of almost 27 hours. PCMag was so impressed that they awarded it an Editor's Choice award and a perfect five star rating.
Unfortunately, the machine it was testing was quite costly. Apple is not a fool, so it sent its colleagues the fully-loaded version of the machine with all possible upgrades except storage capacity. This includes the M1 Max SoC, which has 12 CPU cores and 38 GPU Cores. You can also get it with the M1 Pro. It has the same CPU, but half the GPU cores at 19 You can also get a 4TB SSD. Apple allows you to upgrade to 8TB for as low as $2,200. The maximum memory available is 96GB. It is a workstation-level computer. It is 4.8 lbs in weight and costs $5,299.
PCMag tested it against several Windows PCs and Macs that were previously M1-based. Windows PCs ran high-end mobile CPUs from both Intel and AMD. This includes the Ryen 9, 5900HX, Core i9-12700H and the 11th Generation Core i9-11950H. Although neither AMD nor Intel have released mobile versions of their current architectures yet, both will be able to compete with Apple in terms of sheer horsepower.
The M2-based MacBook Pro was able to walk all over Windows machines in productivity benchmarks. This is not surprising considering what we saw with M1 before it. Handbrake 1.4 showed that the conversion time of the M2-based MacBook Pro was half the time it took to convert the Dell XPS 17 with the 12th gen Intel processor inside. The benchmarking team was however surprised by the performance of the device in the battery life test.
The battery life test consists of playing 720p video at 50% brightness and max volume. Apple promised 22 hours battery life but the test machine was far more than that. After 26 hours and 51 minutes, it finally gave up. It was able to outlast all other machines in the lab, even older M1-based Macs. Although the Windows machines performed well, they did not last 26 hours. This score is nearly seven hours higher than the previous 16-inch Pro with M1 Max SoC.
It is quite impressive what Apple has done to the M2 processor. We still need to wait until Intel and AMD drop their latest mobile processors before we can see the true market. Although we have only seen leaks so far, both companies will be bringing much-needed firepower to the market for mobile in 2023. Intel's 13th generation HX, HHK, and H CPUs are available. AMD has been teasing its Dragon Range fire-breathing CPUs for several months. Both companies are sure to give Apple a tough time in terms of core and sheer power, but it remains to be seen if they can offer similar battery life while still offering the same level of performance. The new MacBook Pro is the first shot.
