AMD will offer its upcoming X3D Ryzen CPUs unlocked to enable overclocking in a surprising change-of-face. This is a welcome change from its previous X3D processor, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. This chip did not allow for any overclocking. Zen 4 with V–Cache will be one of the first AMD CPUs to have additional 3D-stacked, L3 cache that allows for overclocking.
AMD has updated all three Zen 4 V-Cache CPU product pages. Each listing now has a text field that says "unlocked to overclock" followed by "yes." This applies for the 7950X3D, 7900X3D and 7800X3D. The 120W TDP of all three CPUs is significantly lower than the 170W TDP for non-X3D components. The 7800X3D is not available in a non-X3D model. The 7800X3D's lower power consumption was still a prominent feature of the paper launch, and many people were left scratching their heads. Also, the maximum operating temperature was lowered from 95C to 89C. These changes were made by AMD to allow for a little more overclocking.
Techpowerup says that the V-cache configurations will differ on these chips. Models with dual chiplets, the 7950X3D or 7900X3D, will only have 96MB L3 which includes V-Cache on one of their chiplets. The standard 32MB L3 will be available on the other. The total caches will be combined at 144MB for 7950X3D, and 140MB respectively for 7900X3D. On top of 32MB, the 7800X3D has 64MB V-Cache. This is combined with the L1 and L2 to create a total of 104.1MB.
This news is somewhat surprising, but AMD's Robert Hallock had already mentioned it in March 2022. He stated that the Ryzen 5800X3D was not yet ready to accept voltage and frequency changes. He said that they would eventually figure out how to do this. He said that the technology was not yet scalable for the 5800X3D. "In time, it will, but when it does, overclocking will be back." At the time Zen 4 was still a hope. AMD's 5800X3D was released two years after its initial Zen 3 chips. It was therefore assumed that this would be the new cadence.
This is not the case, since Zen 4 X3D will launch just months after its initial batch of CPUs went on sale. Two things are still unknown about the highly anticipated CPUs: pricing and launch date. AMD had previously stated that the CPUs would be available for purchase on Valentine's Day (February 14th). The company had to walk away from that announcement, so we now know it's coming soon. We are not sure if they will be priced at a reasonable price, but we don't think they'll be expensive given how powerful they are.
