ChatGPT: I Made a Simple Math Error
ChatGPT’s website was created by me to fix an error in Open AI’s math app. Everyone is oohing, ahhing, and gawking at how amazing ChatGPT is within the artificial intelligence field. This is OpenAI’s brainchild app, which has been backed by Microsoft.
Microsoft actually announced this week that ChatGPT would be integrated into its “new Bing search engine.”

First, let’s consider this. This week, much was made of the fact that Google’s new Bard AI system also made mistakes. Oops. According to Time magazine, this factual error cost Alphabet, its parent, $100 billion.
Time article on BardBut I’m going to show you that not all AI systems can be trusted, even ChatGPT.

Setting 1.0 I just wrote an article with NewsBreak online about the phenomenal growth rate Pickleball enjoys:
“Pickleball’s incredible growth rate shows no slowdown — as inactive people transition from tennis to pickleball.”
Newsbreak article about Pickleball. It is increasing by at least 30% per year, according to USA Pickleball’s national organization.
Setting 2.0I work for Foldstar Inc. in Princeton, NJ, as the Chief Strategy Officer. (here’s my LinkedIn page). In one of our conversations, I mentioned that pickleball would double in size at a 30% rate of growth.
Because I have learned from playing blackjack, that doubling my stack size will result if I increase it by 26.2% three times.
This is my session mile marker. My stack will double if I can play three times and make just over a quarter. This is a lot less than 30% so it won’t take me more than 3x to double my stack.
(For math geeks: 1.2623 = 2.00, i.e. a double, and 1.4162= 2.00, which means that increasing my stake 41.6% twice will also double it.
So I thought Pickleball would double before three years were up, but I didn’t know how long. It could be 2.5 years. Participants in the industry could find this important.
I was inspired to write 3.0 because it got me thinking. How many years would it take Pickleball for it to double in size, if it were growing at a 30% rate each year?
Also, use the formula to solve for x
(1.30)^x = 2.0,
where x is the time it takes to double, if growth compounded at 30% per year.
Logarithms were the obvious answer.
But logs were something I needed to refresh my memory on. Although I was aware that logs=exponents is an expression, I didn’t know how to create this equation to solve for x.
ChatGPT asked me this question:
ChatGPT session — Mark Hake on February 10, 2023The Answer & the ChatGPT ErrorHere’s the first answer that I received from ChatGPT.
Note that I circled the answer to see that ChatGPT had come up with 2.24 years. ChatGPT used Python’s math function and calculated that ln(2)/ln (1.3) = 2.24 Years.
Setting 4.0But, I knew that was not the right number. It might take longer, I thought.
I did a simple math test. Here’s what I told ChatGPT and its response:

I used a calculator to find the correct answer. Then, I divided ln(2) and ln(1.3). This gave me 2.64. This means that 1.30 to the power 2.64 years equals a twice. It takes longer than ChptGPT stated.
ChatGPT immediately recognized its mistake.
GPT explained to me why this was.
Mark Hake — GPT Session 2-10-22Here’s ChatGPT’s answer:
ChatGPT Answer 2-10-23So I asked it to calculate the decimal using Python.
Mark Hake — ChatGPT Session 2–10-23ChatGPT corrected the error using Decimal
ChatGPT AnswerIn other words, ChatGPT admits to its calculation error using the wrong program, and simply checking it against a calculator would have saved this simple math error.
ConclusionI’m tempted to say that ChatGPT should not be trusted with math calculations. This may be too simplistic. It doesn’t seem to like calculators. I prefer to use software for math questions.
Let me summarize: ChatGPT’s math results may need to be double-checked against a simple calculator.
