Google invests $300M in ChatGPT Claude. AnthropicClaude was created by scientists who have left OpenAI. It has been purchased by Google for $300 million to compete with OpenAI, ChatGPT and other platforms.
It will be fascinating to see what happens. Microsoft spent $10B on ChatGPT, while Google has just invested $300 million in Anthropic, an AI startup with the ambition of competing with ChatGPT.
Photo by Patrick Weissenberger, UnsplashThis deal involves Google buying a 10% stake, which values the company at $3B. This is a reasonable valuation for a startup. Anthropic will also benefit financially from this purchase of heavy computing power via Google’s cloud computing unit.
Microsoft and OpenAI OpenAI was able to build some amazing AI systems like the ChatGPT that can communicate with users via text. Microsoft now has a multiyear multi-billion dollar investment in the company. I look forward to Google investing a multi-billion dollar round.
This just proves how powerful big tech companies are in the AI market if you look at it from a different angle. They are able to compete against each other with all of the cloud computing platforms, data and infrastructure they have. They also have the best industry intelligence. Anthropic and OpenAI are both working on generative AI. These are computer programs that create scripts and art in a matter of seconds.
AnthropicAnthropic and Google were formed by researchers in 2021. They split from OpenAI over concerns about OpenAI’s direction, and the impact of Microsoft’s investments. They wanted to keep the emphasis on advanced AI safety. They trust Google more than Microsoft. ).
Google made Anthropic’s investment through its cloud division. Thomas Kurian, a former Oracle employee, managed it. Anthropic’s data-hungry computing work will be transferred to Google’s data centres. This will allow them to catch up to Microsoft, who is already leading the AI market with OpenAI. Google’s cloud division also works with other start-ups such as C3 and Cohere to increase their position in the AI market.
Why Google and Not Microsoft (Sam Bankman Fried). Anthropic had raised more than $700 million before Google’s investment. Their biggest investor was Alameda Research, a crypto-hedge fund managed by Sam Bankman Fried of FTX. After FTX filed bankruptcy last year, the bankruptcy estate identified Anthropic as an asset that could help creditors with their recoveries. Google’s investment in 2022 was reported only now. This is why Anthropic chose to allow Google’s investment. They had no other choice, it is probable.
How Does Anthropic Fit Google? Anthropic created Claude, an intelligent chatbot that is a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, it has not been made available to the general public. Microsoft has integrated ChatGPT technology in its search engine. Google may be going a different route. Google’s relationship to Anthropic is about providing them with technology for the AI race.
Where can I find Claude? Anthropic’s Claude was available through a Slack integration in a closed beta. The beta is now closed and no longer accepts users. You can’t yet meet Claude and have a chat, but you can find out more.
Anthropic’s constitutional AI technique was used to create Claude. Constitutional AI, which is a principle-based approach to aligning AI systems and human intentions, allows ChatGPT to respond to questions using a simple set principles as a guide.
Anthropic began with a list of ten principles that comprise the AI’s constitution (hence the term “constitutional AI”) They have not been made public! Anthropic claims they are based on the concepts of beneficence, maximising positive impact, non-maleficence and autonomy. This allows for freedom of choice. Although I’m skeptical, I will still praise it when it happens to me.
Conclusions Not much difference. It will appear and behave exactly the same to the eye. It is statistically generative AI that generates texts. However, if the principles/constitution is any sign, we might start seeing strides in the ethical implementations of AI! It is something I look forward to.
