Google will soon launch Bard, an experimental conversational AI (AI) service.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, stated in a Monday blog that the service was made available to trusted testers on Monday (Feb. 6). The service will be made more widely accessible to the public within weeks.
Pichai stated in the post that Bard aims to combine the depth of the world’s information with the intelligence, power and creativity of large language models. It draws from information on the internet to provide high-quality, fresh responses.
Pichai stated that the service will be available in a lighter model, which requires less computing power. This allows Google to get more feedback.
With the goal of answering more complex questions quickly, the company’s latest AI developments will first be applied to Search. Pichai used the example of someone trying to figure out if learning how to play the guitar is more difficult than learning how to play the piano. That’s a more complex question than asking how many keys the piano has.
Pichai stated that AI can help in such moments by synthesizing insight for questions where there is no right answer. Search will soon have AI-powered features that can distill complex information into simple-to-digest formats. This allows you to quickly understand the whole picture and learn more from other sources, such as blogs written by people who play both guitar and piano, or go deeper into a topic like how to start as a beginner.
This announcement comes two months after ChatGPT, an AI chatbot from OpenAI, took social media by storm. It brought AI to the forefront as people flocked in droves to try its human-like conversation abilities.
OpenAI reported a month later that it was considering a tender offering that would bring it $29 billion. This is double the amount it received in a tender in 2021. Microsoft also indicated that it was looking to increase its investment in the company.
OpenAI was funded by Microsoft in 2019 at $1 billion. In 2019, Microsoft became the exclusive partner for cloud computing.
