A content creator from China discovered a simple trick to cool your high-end PC hardware. Simply take your computer into the middle of a record breaking winter freeze. This week, the temperature in Mohe, Northern China, was -53C. A local gamer wondered how her computer would perform in such low temperatures. It turned out that her Intel Core i9-13900K RTX 4090 ran at subzero temperatures. This enabled some impressive overclocking.
According to Wccftech, the content creator goes under the name "Su Da Baka." She drove all the distance to Mohe, with some hardware for testing. It is home to frosty temperatures and is considered China's North Pole, right next to Russia's Siberia. On the social media platform Bilibili, she posted her cooling adventures. She had to constantly modify the test set-up because everything was freezing solid. You can also see that her eyelashes have frozen in many close-up photos.
The first test was an older Intel CPU that ran without using a heatsink attached to an H61 motherboard. It passed the AIDA64 stress test at temperatures ranging from -1 to 3C even without cooling. However, it appears that she left the device outside for too long. It eventually becomes covered in snow and ice. This seems to have forced her to change her strategy.
She had all the components she needed to build a high-end gaming computer, and she was able to bring them. It also includes a Core i9-13900K and an Asus ROG Strix RTX4090. At least initially, the CPU was cooling with a 360mm AIO. The Raptor Lake flagship CPU from Intel can reach 100C when all cores have been loaded up. It's therefore a great CPU to test in freezing conditions. The video shows that the CPU was operating at 10C when she first started it up, while the GPU was at -30C. The liquid in the AIO eventually froze so she replaced it by a passive Noctua heatsink. She then aimed an assortment of industrial fans at the AIO from about a foot.
She was able show some interesting results with that setup. The 13900K ran at around -15C with the GPU running at an astonishing -40C. She was able to increase the clock speed to 6.18GHz. It was not bad considering that it was a Macgyver-designed cooling system. The CPU ran at 15C even at these clock speeds. The GPU stress test shows that the RTX 4090 was running at 29C.
This is obviously not practical and it looks like her whole motherboard has been frozen at the end. It is not clear if this caused any harm, but she claimed that it was fine apart from the dead AIO. We are skeptical but impressed by her determination to go out in such frigid temperatures.
