California appears to be taking its lead in the adoption of electric vehicles in America seriously. A new report shows that zero-emission cars accounted for nearly 19% of all new vehicle sales in California between 2022 and 2022.
The California Energy Commission (CEC), using data from DMV, calculates the number of zero-emission vehicles sold in California each quarter. This information is then compiled and made available as an annual data at the end of each year. California Governor Gavin Newsom has released the data for 2022 now that state employees have returned from holiday vacations.
Zero-emission vehicles, which include fully battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cells, and plug-in-hybrid-electric vehicles, accounted for 18.8% (345.818) of all new California car sales last year. Tesla's staggering 212,586 sales, most of which were Models 3 & Y, made the majority of full battery-electric vehicles that can travel 200 miles on a single charge. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and Toyota Prius Prime were behind Tesla, as was the Chevrolet Bolt EUV (mostly Models 3 and Y), the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (mostly Models 3 and Y), and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. However, none of these vehicles managed to surpass the 10,000-sale mark.
With 50,748 sales, plug-in hybrid electric cars came in second, while fuel cells only made 2,574 sales in California for 2022. This is consistent with the lack of enthusiasm in the country regarding hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which saw fewer buyers in 2022 than previous years.
California was also proud to have sold 40% of all the nation's zero-emission vehicles, trucks, and SUVs in the last year. This can be partly attributed to California's large population and its high sales volume. However, dealerships in California are likely to focus more on zero emission vehicles than conventional combustion engines. California offers incentives to automakers to sell zero emission vehicles through the ZEV Credit program. This program pays financial rewards for every full battery, fuel cell and hybrid-electric vehicle sold.
Newsom stated that California continues to lead the zero emission vehicle revolution, with innovative policies and investments that drive innovation and create good jobs. ZEV access is also expanded across the state. We will continue to push for California's clean transportation future by focusing our efforts on those communities most affected by the climate crisis.
