Samsung SSDs are known for being the most reliable and fast solid-state drives (SSDs). However, owners of Samsung's new high-end SSD might be skeptical. Some owners of the Samsung 990 Pro SSD SSD claim that their drives are rapidly degrading. The new expensive drives could not last for more than a year before they are gone. Samsung is known for being a pain in the rear with warranty claims.
SSDs aren't subject to the same mechanical problems as spinning hard drives. However, even the best NVMe drives won't last forever. The memory cells will become unreadable over time due to repeated write cycles. You can monitor the wear rate with many programs. It is often measured in hundreds of Terabytes in the worst cases. It's not surprising that owners of the 990 Pro have experienced wear rates much higher.
Robbie Khan, a Neowin user, noticed that his new Samsung 990 Pro was deteriorating at an average of 1% per week. Khan wrote an article about the situation after unsuccessful attempts to get Samsung to replace his drive. Samsung offered to replace the drive, but other owners discovered that their drives were wearing at a faster rate. A Twitter user found that the drive had lost 32% after only 2TB of writing. Samsung's NVMe drives in the past would only drop a percentage or two over a year, with tens to terabytes worth of usage.
It happens that I also own a Samsung 990 Pro SSD. I purchased it a few weeks back. Below is a snapshot of my 1TB SSD. It has 94% remaining after writing 2TB data. My SSD will reach zero in just 33TB of data, which I expect to happen within 12-18 months. Yes, I am a heavy user. This is not the longevity I would expect from any SSD. Samsung's premium drives are even less reliable.
Samsung may be aware of the issue and will likely replace your drive. You shouldn't have, but if it is widespread, you won't be able to get a replacement 990 Pro. Is it necessary to replace the 990 Pro every year? These are boot drives and most people use them so it is not a big deal to replace them. We reached out to Samsung and will update this article if they respond.
