With the new Musk-backed twitter, you can't take any thing for granted. Twitter has ended years of tension between app developers, the social network and Twitter. Twitter began closing API access to popular Twitter clients, such as Twitterific and Fenix, several days ago. Now the company has made the official change: Third-party applications are not allowed.
Twitter abruptly cut off access to app developers. Twitter has no press office since Elon Musk fired over half the staff. However, the official developer account tweeted that it was simply "enforcing its longstanding API rules" and some apps might stop working. However, it is not clear which API rules are being broken.
Engadget reports that Twitter quietly updated its developer agreement Jan 19, to clarify the supposedly long-standing rules. It is now clear that developers cannot use API access to create other Twitter apps. Most affected developers have stated that they will cease creating the apps and take them out of the app stores.
It's almost always about money. Twitter doesn't currently have a lot of money, and third-party apps do not have display ads as the official client. Musk has a feature in mind for his Twitter Blue subscription that will show half the ads. This is not a big selling point, when you consider that people can get zero ads by using another Twitter app.
Twitter enforces its API rules. Some apps may not be able to function due to this.

Although the unexpected change is disappointing for developers and users, it could have been worse. Twitter used to restrict third-party apps by setting strict API usage limits. Although developers were allowed to create new clients, they could only connect up to 100,000 users. This encouraged more people to use the official client. Now, that transition is complete.
Twitter faces a difficult road ahead, even if it doesn't compete for those users using these apps. After losing money over the last few years, Musk bought it for $44billion. The deal also brought about a lot more debt for Twitter. The company will be required to pay $1.5 billion in interest by January 31, and many employees are seeking an exit.
